These retailers buy in bulk and can pass some of the savings onto their customers. However, be careful what you buy. Make sure the piece of jewelry is what it is supposed to be. There are many precious stones and gems that can be created in a laboratory now. While some of these stones are beautiful, it can be very difficult to discern a fake from the real thing. Be sure the store has a refund policy and have your high end jewelry appraised to make certain it is what it was sold as.

Fashion Critiques

A quick and simple way to research before buying online is via critiques and product reviews; novices and professionals alike base their trust and opinion on the opinions of others. Critiques are often short and to the point, we want information at our fingertips quickly so we can get on with our busy lives. Now like never before we can share knowledge and information freely, breaking down the barriers of this archaic protectionist society we live in. This suits us just fine, we can draw on our research data and inside information, share it you and accomplish. Many of the brands we critique are personally known to us. For example we know precise details of the SS 2008 collection of cufflinks and silk ties by Vivienne Westwood. Although not available for a few months we’ve handled and photographed the cufflink collection, so we can comment first hand. One thing you can predict from Vivienne is her unpredictability. If you like surprises then make a note on your 2008 Calendar. Like all her styles they’re collectable and will always hold value.

Here is a name no one knows of, Victoria Richards; her silk ties are designed from inspiration, they look and feel different from those pulled from scrap books or archives, driven by market research, or forced by trend setters and style gurus. The difference is inspiration, the result, silk ties that will never hang darkly in your wardrobe, bright and cheerful, free from classification: Colours of dawn and dusk, tropical, Mediterranean, even arctic, autumn, winter, spring and summer, a Victoria Richards Silk Tie, Jo Snow, Chanel 4 anchor man displays them regularly.

Some may say Timothy Everest silk ties are quite ordinary, well; at first glance they appear so. But you must remember we are dealing with a Savile Row Tailor and very often the differences are very subtle, it may be the colours, or the arrangement of pattern, or variation of classical style, or the texture and choice of weave. At closer inspection many subtleties become obvious; for example in his current paisley collection, he used solid dark colours to form a background to display effervescent paisley patterns, as though stitched to the fabric. Look even closer and you’ll notice the texture framed inside the paisley differs slightly from the background. The fabric, the pattern arrangement and colours are enhanced by a variety of subtle textures that make you feel you’re in touch with very high quality. This is an example of needle craft at its best. It’s the subtle differences that give everlasting appeal. Gaining a reputation on Savile Row is not like pulling a name out of a hat, you have to put in the hard yards, it’s a lifetime commitment.

A Savile Row Historic Anecdote: Richard James, the first of the ‘New Generation’ tailors, opens a shop on Savile Row. James introduces Saturday opening (a revolution on Savile Row) and a fashionable edge not seen since The House of Nutter’s glory days.

Tommy Nutter dies. As a fitting epitaph, one of Nutter’s final commissions is the outlandish purple suit Jack Nicholson wears playing The Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns.

Duchamp; predictably out of the ordinary, bold and vivid, but still dependant on classical forms, there’s no getting away from paisley, stripes, checks, floral, polka dots and variations of. The thing with Duchamp, in spite of there luxurious appearance, they are predictable and highly stylised, you know what to expect, no surprises. And since the original founders jumped ship, under new management and ownership the essence has been lost to a large degree. Some of their products are like the old Duchamp we know so well and others are straight out of the archives and resemble any number of other brands. Still they side step being pigeon holed completely and set a good benchmark.

A historic anecdote about the tie: In the 18th and 19th centuries, British sailors often wore white and blue uniforms, complete with a silk or cotton bandanna, or scarf, usually blue.

The sailor suit began to be worn in the mid 1800s as yachting became popular. This has had its greatest impact on clothing for women and children. The modern sailor’s suit was introduced for boys around 1860 and became an instant success. Still worn today, the white and blue outfit also comes with a dress for girls. “Hello sailor”

Michelsons, makers of fine neckwear since 1937: a good honest silk tie, no frills, no extras, no fancy stitching or quirky labels. They have an archive of about 10,000 designs that go back many decades, so variety is never an issue. If you want a conservative every day work tie that will take the hard knocks, then a Michelsons tie is the best economical solution. Their best seller is the classic hounds’ tooth, a style that has seen countless fashion cycles and still a seasonal choice of many well known brands.

Finally: The floral tie has been hanging darkly in wardrobes far too long, it’s time for justice. And just because autumn is upon us does not mean we have to reflect gloom in the clothes we wear. Add some cheer to grey sulky skies with this tribute to the Designer silk tie exclusive to Patrick McMurray, an artist’s rendition of Point Sienna flowers, woven onto ultra fine satin silk

Ted Baker: No Ordinary Fashion Designer

From the United Kingdom comes a stylish clothing retail company that is consistently gaining popularity not just locally but also internationally. Ted Baker is a designer house that has been offering a strong line of well designed apparel and fashion accessories. Not only that, the brand is best known for its unique ability and expertise in integrating new twists and unconventional designs applied to its signature fashion products.

Ted Baker started as a retailer of men’s shirts in Glasgow. It was March 1988 when managing director Ray Kelvin started a store that lured fashionable men not just by the exquisite design and quality of shirts but also because of a unique promotional service that offered exclusive dry cleaning services for the shirts.

From then on, word of mouth has helped promote and boost the popularity of the store. Because of the unique shirt designs, the high quality of fabrics used and of course, the helpful and convenient dry clean services, Ted Baker in no time grew and has expanded to open stores in Manchester and Nottingham. The expansion to Covent Garden marked the formal aggressive growth of the company.

In mid 1990s, branching out of Ted Baker became inevitable. During the period, the brand also started catering not just to fashionable men. Apparel and accessories for women and kids have started being launched and marketed. Now, under the popular fashion house, people from all around the world are starting to enjoy the different feel and attitude provided by the name.

Across the UK, Ted Baker is currently being distributed through numerous stand-alone stores in London and in other key cities. The company has also commissioned several retailers, called Ted Baker Trustees, to help market and distribute its signature fashion products better.

As a sign of its aggressive expansion, Ted Baker is now operating stores across the rest of continental Europe, in the United States, in the Middle East and in the Australasian region. The brand is also active in the wholesale business, which cover New Zealand, Australia, the US, Norway, Canada, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, the British Isles and Belgium.

As for its important and flagship products, Ted Baker is enthusiastically continuing in its tradition to clothe the modern and vanity conscious men from the inside and out. The brand also manufactures and distributes its own line of accessories like men’s watches, hats, belts, fragrances, cufflinks and bags.

Festival Fashion: It’s not All Wellies and Macs

As the summer season approaches, this can mean only one thing: the advent of Britain’s best music festivals. Whether you’re anticipating muddy fields at Glastonbury or sunny skies at the V festival, why should you compromise your fashion sense in the hope of greater comfort? After all, there’s no reason why you can’t maintain your personal style and still brave the crowds and unpredictable weather with confidence!

When you’re compiling your festival wardrobe, make sure footwear is your priority. The unpredictable nature of British summertime means that it’s probably a good idea to pack both a pair of Wellingtons and trainers, because it’s always best to be prepared for every eventuality. And while it may hurt your fashion ego to do so, invest in a mac or dig out an old raincoat to take with you – it’ll be better than adopting a bin liner and will be preferable to shelling out for one at one of the festival stalls if it starts to bucket down.

Unlike girls, boys may find it easier to cope with the possibility of muddy conditions, so make sure you pack a pair of shorts or three-quarter length trousers; this way, you’ll be able to keep cool if it’s warm and sunny, and you’ll also find it easier to keep your clothes dry if the rain begins to create mud streams. Hooded-tops (known as hoodies) and t-shirts are a must, while jumpers are essential for the colder evenings if you don’t want to catch a nasty festival bug.

Some say that the most intriguing thing about festival fashion is the way singular trends arise at the festival itself, as thread-less individuals create their own style from items bought in the festival’s many stands or the nearby villages. A range of hats, crazy sunglasses and fancy dress appendages – including pirate get-ups – have made appearances at festivals in the past.

However, it’s a sure-fire bet that for 2007, the festival fashion trends will show a clean breakaway from the winter goth-rock trend, with a fresher colour palette, slim silhouette and a strong musical influence. For example, a fitted t-shirt adorned with punk-style graphics, matched with a pair of light-grey jeans and a metal belt will make a bold statement and put some effortless fun into your look; while smarter alternatives for men’s clothing and festival outfits are offered in the way of fitted shirts, bow-ties and trilby’s. But, whatever festival you attend in 2007, remember that there’s more to festival fashion than just wellies and macs.

I’m a Fashion Retailer not a Writer

English school teachers always marked my essays the same way “grammar, poor”, “subject matter, good” Their negative comment never deterred me, because from a very young age I’d figured out that the value was in the “subject matter”. Of course my volition was never to be a writer. At that point in time I was too busy to even think about the future. But one day I had to grow up and make important decisions. So I decided on a career in business. And that’s been my life’s work developing business concepts, employing my creative imagination, “no grammar necessary” .Now in my most recent venture, an online shopping service selling men’s fashion accessories. I find the most enjoyable thing is writing articles about the evolution of style and the progress of fashion through the ages.

One can always find good subject matter, grammar becomes secondary, and besides look at the effect American English (Microsoft Spell-check) has on the English language. What has happened to punctuation and capitalisation? What’s important is subject and facts. Subject is the foundation of any article no matter the quality; it’s what you believe in.

I’ve enjoyably, written hundreds of short articles, including critiques (product reviews). And as a result of many hours research have discovered some fascinating historic anecdotes that many people, even avid experts had no knowledge.

The original motivation was to increase back links to my newly formed transactional website and in turn achieve a page one ranking with all the major search engines. This was part of an urgent strategy to avoid the ongoing high cost of cost per click. But I soon found my motivation changed and is now driven by enjoyment and the fact that I can actually succeed in something that for many years others saw as a weakness (English Grammar).

Writing allows me to exercise my creative imagination, use a little poetic license without fear of any retribution. I can write what I like and at the same time increase back-links to my site. And there’s no teacher cold minded breathing hot air down my neck, intent on controlling and dominating

So now I’ve included some of my favourite fashion critiques amongst some fascinating historic anecdotes.

Here Are A Few Of My Favourite Historic Anecdotes: They tell so much about style as it happened without any thought of actually creating a fashion trend that would survive many decades.

1860

Bertie, the rakish Prince of Wales, ordered a short smoking jacket to wear at informal dinner parties at Sandringham from his friend, the tailor, Henry Poole. It was the first dinner jacket on record and was cut in midnight blue cloth. In 1886, a Mr James Potter of Tuxedo Park, New York, was a houseguest at Sandringham. He consequently ordered a similar dinner jacket to Bertie’s from Henry Poole & Co. It was this dinner jacket that Mr Potter wore at the Tuxedo Park Club inspiring numerous copies that fellow members wore as informal uniform for stag dinners. Thus the Tuxedo was born at Henry Poole & Co. It took only eight years for an accidental style to cross the Atlantic Ocean and soon became an American institution. Its humble, royal beginnings were soon forgotten when labelled the Tuxedo.

1971

Maverick screen actress Katherine Hepburn, whose long-term lover Spencer Tracey was a customer of Huntsman, takes the extraordinary step of ordering bespoke denim jeans from her late lover’s Savile Row tailor. Hepburn’s commission foreshadows bespoke denim collections launched in 2006 by Timothy Everest and Evisu.

1880

The rowing club at Oxford Universities Exeter College invented the first school ties. After an emotional win over their rivals, they celebrated by removing their ribbon hat bands from their boater hats and tying them, four in hand around their necks. When they ordered a set of ties, with the colours from their hatbands, they had accidentally created the modern school tie. Schools, clubs, and athletic ties appeared in abundance. Some schools had different ties for various grades, levels of achievement, and for graduates. Thanks to historians and their method of accurate documentation all the original college colours are still available from archived samples and replicate ties can be made to order.

Here Are a few of my favourite self indulgent critiques

This is where I exercise my creative imagination and poetic license no matter how naïve they may seem.

One

Men’s wallets have recently been elevated to fashion accessories status, originally created to perform a specific function, to carry paper money; we’ve just given it a much needed face lift. Functionality not lost, designers like Paul Smith, Simon Carter, and Richard James have brought wallets out of the dark and into the light. Vivid colours embossed on their covers and linings with depictions of comic cartoon strips started appearing, even bikini clad women and mini minors. Richard James a Savile Row tailor uses vibrant pinks, purples and burgundy on the inside flaps to create individuality for his brand. Top stitching is also widely used to create some interest. Then Simon Carter came up with a real winner, the Jeans wallet, made from ultra fine, tender calf hide, it’s slim and thin with just enough compartments for cards and cash. It slips nicely into the back pocket of event the tightest jeans with ease and it feels so good in the hand.

Two

A new range of enamel cufflinks by Ian Flaherty have quietly arrived on the market. They’re beautifully formed from English Pewter, giving life to lifeless forms. There is a horse and rider in breathless pursuit of the unfortunate Fox, the Mallard and Partridge, Pheasant, and Trout, all brought to still life by the artistic prowess of Ian Flaherty. You can surf the net and trod the high streets, but you’ll be hard pressed to find anything that compares with Ian’s latest work.

Three

Here is a brand that’s on the up; she’s made all the right moves and a name befitting a jeweller, or exotic dancer. Babette Wasserman, a lover of the Swarovski Crystal, she displays it maximisation style and sets her place as a cufflink designer amongst men. Women bring a refreshing slant to men’s accessories, a little femininity firmed to cuff, a constant reminder of soft and inviting contours and sweet scented women. Like the cufflinks, like the woman.

Four

One prime example is Timothy Everest, a long time emerging Savile Row tailor, his designer silk ties (Spitalfields Flower) impress upon you the conservatism expected of Savile Row, but with a unique originality, affordable luxury best describes Timothy’s ties, made in England with the Savile Row stamp of approval.

To conclude: In essence my strength in literature (subject) over powered my weakness (grammar) “It’s not how you write its why” subject is the foundation.

If you’ve enjoyed any part of this article or learned something then I’d really like to hear from you.

A Sneak Peak of Spring 2009 Ready-to-wear Fashion

Fall is already here and winter has yet to arrive, but that does not stop the forward thinking fashion designer from pushing the future. In fact, fashion designers usually plan a seasonal line at least a year and a half ahead of the season in question. So while you are planning the holidays with your family, take some time off to plan for the upcoming spring break(or at least plan what to wear on spring break).

Colors: Like everything else, the color schemes of choice is decided by the designer. And while whites and neutrals will forever be the mainstay of spring wardrobes, don’t discard splashes of color here and there. So what is expected for this upcoming Spring of 2009? 3.1 Phillip Lim is sticking with neutrals, and vibrant citrus colors like yummy yellow and outrageous orange. BCBG Max Azria does not see black and white; he sees shades of grey. Nicole Miller is mixing lots of color in wild and fun prints. Like Miller, Walter is all about prints, along with brown and colorful florals. Michael Kors takes a more daring, yet sophisticated route with black, white and blue. And Baby Phat is seeing green…..and purple.

Styles: With the fashion world consistently changing, it seems to be a bit hard to keep up with current trends. But remember its all about the little details, not the big picture. Tracy Reese’s collection is filled with old fashion feminine elements such as lacy tiers and even tulip skirts.Cynthia Rowley goes for a more Jackie O. approach with simple shift dresses, but she also adds more looser fit options to her collection. One of this season’s most diverse collections actually comes from Rock and Republic: well fitted jeans and ruffled blouses, mini party dresses, and plenty of jackets. And Marc Jacobs takes us back to the retro fifties with skirt suits and lady-like hats.

Accessories: Again its all about the details, and what better way to show of your personal style with stylish shoes and bags? Or how about bold jewelry and sunglasses? Whatever look suits you, the designers know there is nothing more personal than jewelry. Miss Sixty adds lots of bold colors to simple jewelry, and bold intricate designs to handbags. On the opposite end Issac Mizrahi keeps it easy with elegant sandals in tamer shades. Moschino Cheap and Chic make statements with large hats. You could also take a walk on the wild side with Proenza Schouler with bold heels and bright gloves.

With so many colors, trends, and accessories to choose from, you might want to make a wish list of what you want and need. This upcoming spring will be the most exciting style wise and I am already counting the days till spring apparel hits the stores!

Paris Fashion Week: Who Says Paris is Best in the Springtime?

You haven’t lived until you’ve been to Paris in the winter — during Fashion Week of course! It may be cold and rainy, but Paris is always beautiful, and buzzing with excitement at a myriad of fashion shows, expositions and parties that even us mere mortals of the public can attend. And, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to brush elbows with celebrities and fashion world icons who jet-set over from the prior Fashion Weeks in New York, London and Milan.

The Fall/Winter Paris Prêt-a-Porter Fashion Week is the most prominent trade event for the fashion industry, when Fall fashions are rolled-out as a season preview for the world’s biggest retail buyers who’re scrambling to place their orders for fashion, handbags, jewelry, shoes, hats and cosmetics. Unlike other large industry convention hall tradeshows, Fashion Week is orchestrated citywide at some of Paris’ most prominent points of interest.

This year from February 25th to March 4th, top designers and fashion design students staged fashion extravaganzas ranging from the pinnacle of good taste to the surreal. Among the selected sites, were the Louvre, Jardin des Tuileries, Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Musée de l’Homme, le Champs-Elysee, le Tour Montparnasse, place du Trocadéro, Théâtre du Châtelet, and La Sorbonne.

Winter Paris Fashion Week 2007 took place February 26 through March 4, and featured everyone who’s anyone in the designer world, including long-time Parisian favorites Chanel, Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix and Givenchy.

Ah, the drama! Aside from the expected eccentric styles and surreal shows, more than a few eyebrows raised when an animal rights protestor stormed the catwalk **** in response to this year’s apparent return to use of fur as a luxury material.

London designer Stella McCartney (daughter of Beatle Paul McCartney), then made headlines for her “fur-free” show, showcasing warm alternatives to fur, with models clad in taffetas, satins, knitwear and cashmere.

Emanuel Ungaro’s Peter Dundas got everyone ready to hit the discos with his collection designed to celebrate night clubbing. Decked-out in plenty of bling and leather, the models strutted and slinked down the runway.

The most controversial show of the week had to be that of Viktor & Rolf. Dutch design partners Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, are renowned for elaborate, wildly-imaginative shows. This year, they invented awkward contraptions that the models had to balance delicately, which were fitted with lighting and music as a kind of “personal fashion show.” The designs were somewhat gothic, reminding one of the movie Van Helsing. The poor models were also required to were stylized wooden clogs, which clip-clopped loudly as they paraded carefully down the runway.

Expectedly, there were WWII and ancient war themes in many of the fashion collections this year, incorporating tall boots, leather, fur, fatigue green, body armor, medallions and epaulettes. Even Jean Paul Gaultier revealed models wearing Scottish tartans with stylized Mohawks, as if going into battle.

Also during Fashion Week, the exclusive Paris boutique Colette, celebrated its 10th anniversary by inviting 10 art curators to spotlight a talent gallery-style on one of it’s walls. It was a fabulous way to show off it’s ultra-trendy collection of music CDs, shoes, handbags, branded water and accessories. The boutique is also renown for glamorous parties, art exhibits and dance classes, and definitely worth a visit when you’re in Paris.

Speaking of accessories, Nokia decided to unveil its Nokia 7373 Special Edition fashion phones by designer Giambattista Valli at Fashion Week, at the “Dress-your-Nokia-in-Giambattista Valli” Party. For the label-conscious, this is a must-have phone. Each one comes pre-loaded with a “behind the scenes” video for a glimpse into the life and inspiration of the designer, along with a selection of Valli graphics and the exclusive ring-tone, “Rhodium.”

Next year is sure to hold more fun and surprises. For sure, Paris in March is the place to be!

Fashion Weeks

Fashion Weeks are events held by designers or fashion houses to display their latest designs and creations to the world’s media and fashion buyers. Catwalk shows are the mainstays of these weeks which are held around the world and which attract mass attention globally. The primary fashion weeks are held in the style capitals, London, Milan, Paris and New York, but there are many others that take place in lesser known areas of the fashion world, and are designed to draw people’s attention to less prominent designers. These include Australian Fashion Week, Japan Fashion Week, South Africa Fashion Week, and Los Angeles Fashion week. In the main fashion cities, fashion weeks are held twice a year, displaying ‘autumn’ trends and their ’spring’ collections. These are held a long time in advance of the actual season to allow adequate coverage and previews of the designs before the actual season. This is also done to give buyers a chace to purchase the designers’ creations, and so retail stores can use elements of the designers’ styles in their mass produced clothes for the High Street market.

Fashion Weeks are attended by buyers for major stores, the media, celebrities, and members of the entertainment industry. In years gone by, fashion weeks were predominantly used as commerical events, and only people in the industry attended them. Today, however they are lavish, exclusive events, attended by many celebrities and cause a media frenzy. The week is a 7-day extravaganza which often includes live music, lavish galas and charity events. Some shows are also open to selected members of the public, as well as some of the events that display the designer’s latest handbags, jewellery, shoes, hats and cosmetics. Many important fashion design schools now feature in contemporary Fashion Weeks as well.

Fashion Weeks have been around since 1943, when the first one was held in New York to divert attention away from French fashions during the Second Worl War, when fashion industry insiders were unable to travel to Paris to see French fashion shows. Fashion publicist Eleanor Lamber staged a “Press Week” for fashion journalists to present the creations of American designers, who were not usually paid any attention by the fashion media. The buyers were not invited to these shows but instead had to visit the designers’ showrooms. Press Week was an unprecedented success, and fashion magazines like Vogue, which were normally filled with French designs, beagn increasingly to focus on American fashion.

Some beauty products sponsor fashion weeks, such as the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and the L’Oreal Fashion Week held in Toronto, due to the inherent relationship between fashion and beauty. Other fashion weeks are held for one precise type of fashion, such as swimwear, lingerie, or bridal couture. Fashion weeks are viewed as the designer’s way of making their collections visible and broadcast throughout the world in a very short space of time. This shortens the time in which it will take for people to start recognising, buying and following the designer’s trends, which in the end is the designer’s ultimate aim.
